NY Elizabeth to Offer Portrait by Sir Peter Lely, Jan Van Os Flower Still Life

Dutch artist Sir Peter Lely started his career painting biblical and mythological scenes. However, he established his reputation for rendering portraits of politicians and British royalty. A large oil on canvas portrait of Mary of Modena, Queen of England, typical of Lely and his studio during that era, is a key highlight of this upcoming sale from NY Elizabeth. The artwork, dating back to the 17th century, shows a full-length portrait of James II’s second wife. She is dressed in a flowy burgundy gown with a blue wrap. The portrait comes enclosed in a vintage gilded frame. 

A large oil painting on canvas by Jan Van Os also leads the catalog. Van Os, a Dutch old master from the 18th century, was famous for his landscape paintings, figures, and fruit and floral still lifes. The available work, Still Life Study of Different Flowers in a Vase, is striking. It showcases several flowers, including roses, chrysanthemums, and pinks in a glass vase. On a stone alcove lay fruits like peaches and grapes. Collectors can also consider a 17th-century oil on canvas portrait of a lady dressed as Diana, Gustave Courbet’s harvest landscape oil painting, and View of Posillipo from The Riviera Di Chiaia, an oil painting.
