Abstract Expressionist artist Edward (Ed) Clark was known for his broad and robust brushstrokes and large-sized, ovoid canvases. He came to be appreciated as a Modernist much later in his career. He pioneered the skillful use of the economical push broom and the elliptical canvases to create extraordinary artworks. One such striking painting by Ed Clark, titled Gray Force, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Phillips. It is marked by bold horizontal strokes of sky blue, French grey, slate, and white. The oval canvas best expresses the movement beyond the limits of linearity. Clark’s iconic tool, the push broom, helped him in rendering “the big sweep” and expressing his creativity on large scale.
Anish Kapoor’s Untitled polished and lacquered steel surface also leads the listings. It flips the reflection of the viewer and their surroundings upside down in emerald green light. Created in 2011, it is a colorful manifestation of Kapoor’s lifelong fascination with concave mirrors. Another noteworthy installation is Urs Fischer’s The Trouble with Being Born. Inspired from Dadaism and Pop Art, Fischer creates an active fountain with cast brass, an electric pump, and a brass spray nozzle.
