The upcoming Modern Art & Design Auction, presented by Los Angeles Modern Auctions, features art from Raymond Pettibon, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Ed Moses, and more. Pettibon, an American artist, is best known for his ink drawings that combine images with text. While he is self-taught, he credits drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instrumental to his work. In the mid-1970s, Pettibon began designing album covers for his brother’s band. He went on to create cover art for bands such as Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. Highlighted in the auction are 23 of his works from A Yarn Spun to No Mend. These ink and watercolors vary in size.
Included in the sale is an Ed Ruscha screenprint. This 11-color piece, signed by Ruscha with Mason Williams, shows a gas station with intersecting signs that read “standard.” Also in the auction is an Andy Warhol screenprint, titled The Star (From Myths), and an untitled 1985 oil painting by Ed Moses.
