Mellie Cooper’s Trompe-L’Oeil Artworks, South Sea and Tahitian Pearl Necklace Offered in Rafael Osona Auctions’ Late Summer Auction

Atlantic Beach, an oil on board painting by Robert Jones (b.1943), is one of the leading lots in the Late Summer Auction from Rafael Osona Auctions. Jones was a fisherman in the coastal waters of his native Cornwall before becoming a full-time artist. It was during this time that his love of the sea developed. Jones studied fine art at the Falmouth School of Art. His paintings have been widely exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. Like the one portrayed in this painting, his seascapes and marine subjects are particularly well known. His paintings concern the atmosphere, changing weather, and light conditions on land and sea. Another notable painting is from American artist Robert Stark Jr. (1933 – 2014) and is titled Nantucket Rainbow Fleet.

Mellie Cooper’s hand-cast paper and acrylic painting, Portrait of Fredrick Coffin’s Ship the Syren, is another notable lot in the sale. Cooper (b. 1949) is a native of Southport, CT and Nantucket, MA. Cooper holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Pratt Institute. She combines techniques of sculpting, printmaking, and painting. The resulting trompe-l’oeil artworks exist in multiple theoretical and physical dimensions.
