A set of ten Mid-Century Modern chairs will be available in Clarke Auctions’ upcoming Fine Art, Jewelry, Mid Century & Antique Estate Auction. Karl Springer created these pieces with lacquered parchment by stretching and varnishing leather into a solid and defined form. The chair cushions are upholstered in giraffe-patterned fabric, another exploratory aspect of Springer’s signature style. Mid-Century furniture is particularly highlighted throughout this auction, including mirrors, light fixtures, and tables.
Fine art and jewelry will also be included in the sale. One of Gen Paul’s oil paintings is featured, showing a red and green clown against a mustard yellow background. The Parisian artist traveled through the United States during the Jazz Age, inspiring many of his paintings and helping him lay the groundwork for Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s. Another available lot is a modern parody of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe prints. It was created in 2000 by Shepard Fairey, the street artist who launched the OBEY clothing company and designed President Barack Obama’s 2008 Hope portrait.
