Fine Art by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg Available at Palm Beach Modern Auctions

Available from Palm Beach Modern Auctions this October is a robust collection of fine art, decorative art, furniture, and jewelry. Leading the sale is a three-part offset lithograph of Roy Lichtenstein’s As I Opened Fire, one of his best-known multipart paintings. This triptych is a sequence from All American Men of War that is appropriated for these images, altered, and enlarged to enhance the colors and contours. As cropped machine gun views are arranged, they are united by handwritten “BRAT!” and “BRATATATATA!” and by aerial combat captions. This work, an example of Pop Art, illustrates Lichtenstein’s response to Abstract Expressionism by erasing the artist’s hand from the artwork. Another key fine art lot in the catalog is a lithograph by American artist Robert Rauschenberg, titled Poster For Peace. Rauschenberg’s painting style was influenced by popular culture, technology, and eclectic materials. The offered work is an offset lithograph and is signed, dated, and numbered in pencil on the lower left.

Several jewelry lots will be on offer in this event, including a sterling silver Tiffany Swirl cuff bracelet. This piece from the Elsa Peretti collection has an inside circumference of approximately six inches with a one-inch opening. Also available is Tom Wesselmann’s SEASCAPE plaque. This color porcelain plaque with integral fixings is attached to a board for hanging. A prominent figure of New York Pop Art, Wesselmann created both cut-metal sculptures and assemblages.
