Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was one of the most influential and prolific sculptors of the mid-19th century. He worked with materials ranging from porcelain to marble and pioneered new treatments of traditional themes. Carrier-Belleuse was also one of the first sculptors to organize public sales of his works at auction. Available in the upcoming Eclectic Collection of Estates Worldwide sale, presented by Akiba Antiques, is a bronze sculpture by Carrier-Belleuse titled La Liseuse. The sculpture shows a woman, clothed in black, reading a matching black book.
Another key item is from Cartier. The brand’s Santos wristwatch was created by Louis Cartier in 1904 to assist Alberto Santos, a Brazilian aviator, in easily viewing the time while flying a plane. The Santos thus became Cartier’s first-ever wristwatch created for men as well as the first pilot’s watch. Available in this auction is an 18-karat gold Santos Galbee.
Several lots of furniture are also offered in this event, including a multi-functional obelisk by Rick Owens. He started crafting furniture back in 2006 and his dark, monochrome designs are inspired by Brutalist architecture, Egyptian tombs, and Art Deco. The available piece, which can be placed vertically or horizontally, is made of elmwood, foam, and camel skin. It was purchased at Art Basel 2019.
