DuMouchelles to Feature Works of Romare Bearden, Pablo Picasso, and More

DuMouchelles’ upcoming sale offers a wide-ranging catalog of fine art, antiques, and decorative items from notable estates across Michigan. Among the top lots is a screenprint by American artist Romare Bearden, titled Carolina Blue (Interior). Bearden’s works incorporate Black American experiences into modern American art. It was Bearden’s collages that made him known, largely because they engaged established artistic ideas, including Cubism and Dada, as well as the Expressionist impulse. In the offered work, the compositional style is rhythmic and lyrical, echoing the jazz tradition of call-and-response. Another key fine art lot in the catalog is a painting on canvas by Peter Max, titled Mathematical Glimpse. An illustrator and graphic artist, Peter Max is known for his colorful Pop Art and Neo-Expressionist works. Max’s fascination with numbers and mathematics parallels his fascination with visual phenomena. The available framed work is dated and signed in brown paint at the top right. 

A selection of Pablo Picasso ceramics is available in this auction, including Profil de Jacqueline, a red earthenware clay Madoura dish image of his second wife. Jacqueline is portrayed in a geometric profile by Picasso, harsh and beautiful simultaneously, looking forward with lidded eyes and a calm and loving expression. The angular curves of Jacqueline’s profile are contrasted with the gently curved ceramic dish, which brings out the geometric features of her face. Bidders can also consider works from various other Asian cultures, including a Chinese silk scroll mountain landscape, a Japanese bronze Suiban and lead flower frog, and a pair of Chinese bronze sculptures of guardian (foo) lions.
