Although Joan Miró was influenced by several movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, and Dadaism, it was the Surrealist movement that stood out for the artist. A highly influential figure in 20th-century Spanish painting, Miró was a fantasy painter, ceramicist, printmaker, and designer. In describing his work, the artist once said: “The spectacle of the sky overwhelms me. There, in my pictures, tiny forms in huge empty spaces. Empty spaces, empty horizons, empty plains – everything which is bare has always greatly impressed me.” The first day of the upcoming May VIP Collection, Online-Only Auction, presented by Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery, Inc., features a lithograph by Miró. Executed in 1961, the lithograph shows abstract shapes in green, teal, orange, and yellow. A black star is placed in the lower left.
Another key lot is a men’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch. Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window. The available lot is crafted of stainless steel and 18-karat gold. The auction also features an Italian fountain with a standing cherub and a dolphin at the top. The circular basin contains four additional cherubs. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Invaluable.
