Concept Gallery Presents Edward Redfield’s Spring Landscape and François Stahly’s Bronze Sculpture

Edward Willis Redfield (1869 – 1965) was an Abstract Expressionist specializing in landscape paintings. He formed a lifelong friendship with Robert Henri, the future leader of Social Realism. Though Redfield was known for depicting winter scenes, he also rendered several summer and spring landscapes, mostly set in Maine, where he spent summers with his family. The American artist stopped painting in the mid-1940s. Instead, he started producing hooked rugs and painted furniture. Spring Blossoms, an oil on canvas work by Edward Redfield, is now available in this upcoming sale from Concept Gallery. According to the auction house, this art piece was possibly created between 1910 and 1915. The artist captured the spring scene with warm greens and shades of blue.

La Coquille (The Shell), executed by François Stahly (1911 – 2006), is also a leading lot. This petite version is a polished bronze sculpture. As per the auction catalog, another version of this gilded bronze is in the French State Collection (FNAC). The listed lot has been acquired from the artist Darthea Speyer, who actively collected Stahlys’ works. Among furniture, a pair of vintage Karpen of California horn lounge chairs is notable. The chairs feature original peach upholstery and splayed wooden legs capped in chromed toe guards.
