Charles Schulz’s Original Peanuts Comic Strip, Hunt Slonem’s “Marmoset” Lead Helmuth Stone Gallery’s Upcoming Sale
Jun 16, 2024 14:00 EDTCharles Schulz, considered one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century, was an American cartoonist. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 26, 1922, Schulz was best known for creating a highly successful comic strip, Peanuts. From an early age, he loved to draw. In 1937, a drawing of his boyhood dog Spike was featured in Robert Ripley’s syndicated panel of ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’ The upcoming Fine Art & Antiques Auction, offered by Helmuth Stone Gallery, highlights an original Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz. This black and white strip from January 29, 1989 comes framed behind glass. The offered lot depicts iconic, quirky characters like Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy van Pelt, and others.
Another highlight is an oil on-board artwork by Hunt Slonem. Titled Marmoset, this rare early painting was made in 1988. It depicts a gold monkey in a lush green tree. An American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Slonem is famous for his paintings of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds rendered in a Neo-Expressionist style. Pablo Picasso’s 1934 etching Garcon et Dormeuse a la Chandelle, a Chinese Yuan Longquan celadon peony vase, and a jade carving from Panama (circa 500 – 1000 CE) also feature in the event.
