Andrew Wyeth’s Nude Depiction at Kuerner Farm Leads American & Southern Auction by Brunk Auctions

The upcoming American & Southern Auction | September 27, 2024, offered by Brunk Auctions, will feature a painting by Andrew Wyeth titled Undercover and Evening at Kuerner’s Study. It is a double-sided work from 1970, signed lower “Andrew Wyeth.” It is a watercolor and drybrush on a single sheet of paper, acquired directly from his family’s private collection. It is a nude of a young person contemplatively sitting on a rock. Andrew Wyeth (1917 – 2009) was one of the best-known American visual artists of the middle 20th century. Anna and Karl Kuerner were his neighbors in Chadds Ford. The Kuerner farmhouse and the reflection of the house in the farm-pond were one of Wyeth’s most important subjects for nearly 30 years. Other major lots in the sale include an oil on Masonite painting by Birger Sandzen and an oil on canvas painting by Ralph Albert Blakelock. 

George W. Stewart’s Kentucky coin silver horse trophy is notable in the decorative art category. 

George W. Stewart was active in Lexington, Kentucky between 1843 and 1852, during which he produced trophies or racing prizes for several stake races. The races took place both in Lexington, for the Kentucky Association, and for the race meets in Louisville. They are known for heavy repoussé and are elaborately ornamented with horse racing motifs, showing jockeys on horseback racing towards the finish. Very few of Stewart’s trophies have survived.
