American Art

The upcoming American Art auction, offered by Sotheby’s, presents a collection of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Milton Avery’s Porch Sitters and Young Musician are two works being offered from a private American collection. Avery was a modern artist whose work is representational, concerned more with the depths of color than any visible reality. The sale will also include a section titled Art of the Americas, which encompasses works from across the North and South American continents. Included are lots from Canadian modernist artists Emily Carr and Lawren Stewart Harris, as well as works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Frederic Edwin Church, and other Americans. 

Featured in this sale is Maxfield Parrish’s Mill Pond, one of the artist’s most commercially successful landscapes. Parrish usually used a blue and white monochromatic underpainting, applying alternating layers of translucent glaze and varnish to create his works.
