Alex Cooper Auctioneers Offers Mix of Paintings, Furniture, Decorative Arts, & Fine Rugs
Dec 19, 2020 10:00 ESTWidely considered the founder of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole was a Romantic landscape painter. Mostly self-taught, he inspired a generation of American landscape painters through his depictions of majestic mountains, rivers, and valleys. As Cole once said, “The most distinctive, and perhaps the most impressive, characteristic of American scenery is its wildness.” Alex Cooper Auctioneers’ upcoming sale will feature a painting by Cole. Titled Italian Cottage, the piece shows a cottage with two figures amidst mountains.
This sale will also bring fine rugs, including a rare antique Bakhshaish rug. Originating in the small village of Bakhshaish in Iran, these rugs are noted for their bold, geometric, dynamic, and abstract adaptations of age-old tribal and Persian motifs. A Sormani dress mirror is also among the key items. Venetian cabinetmaker Paul Sormani established his firm in 1847 and soon became a favorite among French royalty. Made in the style of Louis XVI, the available bronze mirror is decorated with foliage designs. Register to bid for any of these items on Bidsquare.
