A Portrait by Acclaimed American Artist George Bellows leads Freeman’s upcoming auction A Beautiful Reality
Dec 05, 2022 12:00 ESTAn oil painting by George Bellows, the most acclaimed American artist of his generation, is coming to an auction by Freeman’s. It is a portrait of August Lundberg completed by Bellows in 1907. George Bellows (American, 1882-1925) began drawing well before kindergarten. As a young man, Bellows was encouraged to become a professional baseball player, and paid handsomely as an illustrator, but it was painting that he was most fond of doing. He painted the modern Manhattan projects, Maine coastlines, hardworking workers, and sportspersons. His paintings and prints capture the contrasting, ever-changing American lives. They are in the collections of major American art museums, like the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The upcoming auction, A Beautiful Reality, will bring late-19th and early-20th-century American art collected by Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and Sandy Rifkin to market. Featured works include major artists linked with the Ashcan School including William Glackens, John Sloan, George Luks, Reginald Marsh, and Charles Burchfield. William Glackens’s Afternoon in Provence (Woman and Child on Donkey) is a jewel-like painting created during the artist’s eight-year stay in France. Fine examples of Modernism and Illustration Art, including works by Marguerite Zorach and Eyvind Earle, will also be offered to collectors. Find the listed items and more on Freeman’s and register to place a bid.
