A 25-Million-Dollar Abstract Painting by Willem de Kooning Leads Sotheby’s Sale of the David M. Solinger Collection
Nov 14, 2022 17:30 ESTA 25-million-dollar collage by Willem De Kooning (1904 – 1997) leads Sotheby’s upcoming The David M. Solinger Collection Evening Auction. The Dutch-born American artist was considered to be one of the greatest post-war Abstract Expressionist painters. Early in his career, de Kooning only painted men before he was encouraged to paint women as well. His approach revolutionized the 1940s into abstraction. De Kooning’s paintings had abstract anthropomorphic, feminine elements, yet all the figures were spaced out. The available irrepressibly vibrant collage was executed in 1950.
Sotheby’s upcoming auction is an extraordinary assembly of 20th century masterworks. Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet, Alexander Calder, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and William Baziotes are some of the featured artists. Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp or Jean Arp (1886 – 1966) was a German-French sculptor, painter, and poet. He was known as a Dadaist and an abstract artist. Fruit méchant, a unique pink limestone, life-sized sculpture by Arp is available in the upcoming auction. Executed in 1936, reduced to its essential form, Fruit méchant exemplifies Arp’s ability to give life to objects. Find the listed items and more on Sotheby’s and register to place a bid.
