500 Gallery to Feature Art Attributed to Lee Krasner, Pablo Picasso, and More

Available from 500 Gallery this August is a robust collection of fine paintings, prints, multiples, drawings, and ethnographic artifacts. Leading the sale is an abstract composition attributed to Lee Krasner. It is signed “Lee” in the lower right and comes to the market unframed. This richly-hued painting offsets deep purples with strokes of ochre. Krasner was an inventive, skillful painter who worked on the cutting edge of Abstract Expressionism. She frequently switched between styles to fully explore her ideas. Also available is a set of 27 watercolor sketches attributed to Pablo Picasso. Each piece is signed and executed on fibrous gray-tan paper. Some sketches revisit familiar Picasso themes, including doves, horseback riders, and bulls. 

A Cubist composition attributed to Le Corbusier will be offered as well. It is a watercolor and crayon on paper piece signed by the artist. The work uses geometric lines and amorphous curves to evoke a bird-like form with a human face. An architect and artist, Le Corbusier exerted broad influence on the Modernism movement and urban planning. Other key artists with attributed works in the catalog include Georgia O’Keeffe, Franz Kline, and Oskar Kokoschka. Among ethnographic works in the sale, a ritual vessel from Mali is notable. Carved of wood with a convex lid, this vessel features an equestrian and horse surrounded by groups of seated people.
