20th-Century Paintings & Contemporary Sculpture Pieces Lead Sarasota Estate Auction’s Upcoming Sale

French painter Félix Ziem was associated with the Barbizon School and Orientalist art. After a visit to Italy in 1841, the artist was completely in awe of the city of Venice. The place inspired several of his works, including a variety of landscapes and waterscapes. The upcoming sale from Sarasota Estate Auction will feature one such oil on board by Félix Ziem portraying a Venetian canal scene. Another painting of interest in the catalog is Eric Sloane’s oil on Masonite titled Cochiti. It depicts a brown pot on a shelf with black patterns on it. The work is based on Cochiti pottery, noted for its natural motifs with mineral, plant-based or black hues on cream pots with an orange base.  Javier Calleja’s set of two figures titled Do Not Touch and The Bearded Warrior also leads the listings. One is a monochrome piece portraying a Chibi-style human in a hoodie and shorts. The other is a tiny figure of Guanyu in green clothing holding a spear. Jorge Blanco’s painted aluminum piece titled Bunny is an interesting collectible on offer that exemplifies his distinctive sculptural language. Modern Art by Miró, Contemporary Works by Robert Indiana and Carole A. Feuerman Available at URDE Fine Art Auction

URDE Fine Art Auction will soon present its March Affordable Art and Photography Sale, offering over 750 lots of fine art, photography, prints, multiples, and more. Among the top lots is a limited edition lithograph by Joan Miró. Dated 1975, this hand-signed piece comes from an edition of 30. Titled La folle au piment rageur (The Crazy Chili Pepper), the work embraces color and whimsy. It features the artist’s signature stars and scribbles. This is one of several designs that Miró developed in the 1970s under that title, all featuring blobs of orange color with black accents.  Contemporary artworks are also represented in this catalog, including a Heal silkscreen by Robert Indiana from 2014. The offered variation includes the word “Heal” in silver against a soft rainbow background. It uses the visual language of Indiana’s iconic Love sculpture, which arranges the four-letter word in a square shape. Also available is a 2012 archival mixed media print suite from Carole A. Feuerman. The artist is a hyperrealistic sculptor best known for her depictions of swimmers and bathers. The available mixed media print suite shows one of Feuerman’s favored images— a woman resting her head, torso, and arms on an inflatable tube— in four sets of colors. This image is known as Survival of Serena and is inspired by the Cuban immigrants who came to the United States by sea in the 1960s. Additional lots of interest in this sale include a bronze Statue of Liberty sculpture by Peter Max, a color lithograph by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and a patinated resin text art sculpture by Mr. Brainwash. Contemporary Art by Calman Shemi, Mr. Brainwash, and KAWS Available at Robinhood Auctions

A colorful work by contemporary Argentinian-born Israeli artist Calman Shemi is among the top lots of Robinhood Auctions’ upcoming Modern & Contemporary Art Auction. The offered piece is acrylic on canvas with a lacquer coat, and it features streaks of color layered in thick, defined brushstrokes. In the background are horizontal white lines that evoke the staff of a music score. Shemi’s signature appears in the lower left corner. Many of Shemi’s works embrace a full rainbow of color, often applied to street scenes, music, and flowers. Another notable contemporary artwork in the catalog is a color screenprint by American street and pop artist KAWS (also known as Brian Donnelly). The Promise shows two of the artist’s signature grayscale Companions (stylized figures inspired by Mickey Mouse). The larger figure passes a globe to the smaller Companion, symbolizing environmental responsibility and the green economy. KAWS designed this image in 2022, basing the screenprint on an installation that he created for Dadu, Children’s Museum of Qatar.  Other artists who have worked at the intersection of pop culture and high art include Peter Max, Mr. Brainwash, and Andy Warhol; the upcoming sale highlights works from each. Offered from Mr. Brainwash (also known as Thierry Guetta) is a mixed media original piece depicting Charlie Chaplin against a colorful, graffiti-covered background. Bidders can also consider Peter Max’s original mixed media work titled Earth and a suite of ten silkscreen prints of Campbell’s Soup cans from Andy Warhol. Contemporary Art by Ibrahim Mahama and Post-War Works by American Pop Artists to Sell at Bonhams

In this upcoming timed sale of post-war and contemporary art from Bonhams, a variety of paintings, prints, wall hangings, and other works of fine art will cross the auction block. Among the top lots is an installation piece by contemporary Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. Composed of metal tags on charcoal jute sacks, this work measures ten feet across. Mahama often works with jute sacks, stitching them together and draping them over architectural elements. The sacks move through multiple countries and industries—from Southeast Asian factories to Ghanaian cocoa bean distributors—before they arrive at his studio. “I am interested in how crisis and failure are absorbed into this material with a strong reference to global transaction and how capitalist structures work,” the artist said about his favored material. The offered installation, titled DABI DABI, was shown at White Cube in London and was acquired there by the present owner in 2019.  Also available in this auction is a signed and dated photo collage and colored pencil on panel work by American Pop artist Larry Rivers. The offered work from 1967 is rendered in muted gray and white, with the exception of a blue outline of Africa in the center. Around the continent the artist has placed images such as a human figure standing up and camels trekking across the desert. Offered from Louise Lawler is a 2008 work titled Red, Yellow and Black. Composed of silver dye bleach printed on a museum box, this figurative piece evokes the repetitions of Warhol’s screenprints. Red chains cross over repeated images of Jesus Christ. Other key artists with work in the catalog include Kathryn Andrews, Fab 5 Freddy, and Peter Triantos. For more information on the Post-War & Contemporary Art Online sale, visit Bonhams’ website.

Basquiat Masterpiece, Abstract Works by Richter and Mitchell Available in Sotheby’s Fall Contemporary Evening Auction

Sotheby’s mid-November Contemporary Evening Auction explores the most radical and transformative art movements of the late 20th century. Represented in the catalog are works of Color Field painting, Pop Art, Minimalism, and more. A self-portrait by Jean-Michel Basquiat leads the listings. Titled Self-Portrait as a Heel (Part Two), this acrylic and oilstick on canvas is dominated by an electric green background. In front, fragmented body parts appear from multiple angles. Basquiat painted this piece between 1982 and 1983, during a visit to Los Angeles. Shortly before, he made his breakthrough in the mainstream art world, and his fame was spiking when he created a series of self-portraits. Responding to this newfound fame, Basquiat used his art to explore his role as a Black man in a predominately white art world.  Another notable lot in this upcoming auction is an abstract 1997 work by Gerhard Richter. This work belongs to the artist’s Abstraktes Bilder series from the 1990s. Richter executed the present work on an immense square canvas using rich shades of wine red and navy blue. Utilizing his signature squeegee, Richter built up layers of paint on the canvas, scraping them back to reveal glimmers of color beneath. Bidders can consider other abstract works by Joan Mitchell and Lucio Fontana, as well as paintings by Barkley L. Hendricks and Wayne Thiebaud. Visit Sotheby’s website for more information on the upcoming Contemporary Evening Auction and to register to bid.

Swann’s Contemporary Art Auction Features Sam Szafran, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Keith Haring Works

The tiny spaces that Sam Szafran (1934 - 2019) occupied were his world, captured on canvas with thousands of details. A dizzying perspective of stairs captured in an untitled painting from 1980 by Szafran is leading the Contemporary Art auction from Swann Auction Galleries. It is a color pastel on board, signed by Szafran. He was a Jewish-Polish artist who grew up witnessing the disasters of World War II. As an artist, he preferred solitude, focusing on his own existence and inner states to give rise to his favorite themes like plants, staircases, and workshops in pastel and then watercolor. This artwork distorts and deconstructs the viewer's perspective. A crayon, pen and ink, and wash on card artwork, drawn in 1926 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 - 1938) is another highlight in the sale. As a self- trained artist, Kirchner founded the artists' group Die Brücke along with Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The group gave birth to German Expressionism. They made life-drawings from nude models in unselfconscious, informal poses in their communal studio, decorated with non-Western art and erotic images. They rejected academic art as stultifying and started originating works that were emotionally expressive, like the works of Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch. Their art still resonates with the contemporary originality they held in the 1910s and 1920s. View the complete catalog of the Contemporary Art auction by visiting Swann Auction Galleries.
