Modern & Contemporary Sale
Four paintings from rising Cleveland artist Rose Haserodt will be offered in Neue Auctions’ upcoming sale What’s Neue Pussycat? MCM Art & Design. In her own words, Haserodt’s style aims to capture “raw, awkward experiences... romantic without the romance.” The offered works from the contemporary artist show colorful, slightly disjointed landscapes and plant studies. Joshua Tree at Pensacola II, her 2018 oil painting, shows the titular tree in scattered fragments with a pile of boulders in the background. Another contemporary work available in this auction is Thomas Ackermann’s Self Portrait in a Room. A fresh take on Vincent van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles paintings, the artist places himself close to the viewer with a questioning look in his eyes. Collectors interested in fine art will also find a screenprint from Roy Lichtenstein in this event. It shows the Oval Office of the United States White House in clearly defined lines and bold colors. The piece was commissioned by the Artists for Freedom of Expression Project during the 1992 presidential election. Modern furniture lots on offer include a Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman set, as well as a rust-orange Italian sectional sofa. Vintage & Contemporary Decorative Arts & Furnishings
European furniture manufactured in the 1750s and 60s was popularly basketed under the Chippendale style. This type of furniture harmoniously blended three different design orientations: Gothic, Modern (Rococo), and Chinese. In a time when furniture trends were only named after monarchs, the Chippendale was the first-ever to find an identity after a cabinetmaker, Thomas Chippendale. A set of twelve Chippendale-style mahogany dining chairs will be available in the upcoming auction of Vintage & Contemporary Decorative Arts & Furnishings, presented by Nadeau’s Auction Gallery. Each chair features two arms and ten sides, all with slip upholstered seats. The event also features a 148-piece set of Gorham sterling flatware. The offered Camellia collection includes salad forks, dinner forks and knives, butter knives, pickle forks, meat-carving tools, ladles, and several other pieces of table cutlery. A leather-top executive desk designed by John Scalia is also available. The desk was commissioned for a London-based furniture firm, Schmieg & Kotzian. A selection of sterling silver cutlery, antique wooden furniture, and other lots are on offer as well. Visit Bidsquare to browse the full catalog and to register to bid.

Contemporary Collector
Japanese painter and sculptor Takashi Murakami is known for his artworks blurring the gap between fine and commercial art. Often compared to the likes of Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, Murakami’s style is a combination of contemporary Japanese and Pop art. The upcoming Contemporary Collector auction, presented by Doyle, features a 2016 sculpture pair titled Mr. DOB (Complexcon) from Murakami. Both cast resin polychrome sculptures represent the artist’s signature sharp-toothed character, inspired by animated icons such as Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Deriving their name from dobojite— a Japanese slang expression meaning 'why'— Mr. DOB paintings and sculptures by Murakami are among his most popular works. The auction also highlights Untitled (Please! Please! Please!) by contemporary American artist Barkley Hendricks. A pioneer of conceptual art, Hendricks worked in multiple mediums. The featured graphite, crayon, stamp, colored ink, and photo transfer on paper piece reflects Hendricks’ bold and realistic style. Also presented is an acrylic and oil painting by landscape artist Wade Hoefer. This luminous landscape explores the tranquil scenes of northern California. Also offered are sculptures by artists such as Olivier Babin, Harold Ancart, KAWS, and Tim Berg. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Doyle.

Post-War & Contemporary Art Online
Considered a seminal figure in Concrete Cuban art, Loló Soldevilla began painting in 1948. One year later, Soldevilla was named Cuba’s cultural attachée to Europe. She moved to Paris and remained there—with periodic trips back to the island—until 1956. During her stay, she visited London, after which she turned away from hard-edged abstraction and made circles the dominant form in her work. “I have changed the entire organization of my paintings,” she wrote at the time. A 1957 untitled painting by Soldevilla will highlight the upcoming Post-War & Contemporary Art Online auction, presented by Bonhams. The oil and collage piece shows geometric patterns of circles, rectangles, lines, and colors. The auction also highlights an untitled oil on canvas piece by James Rosenquist. Considered a pioneer of Pop Art, Rosenquist was known for his billboard-sized works and striking color schemes. He took up commissions and made large-scale, fragmented works that brought the visual language of commercial painting onto the canvas. During the 1970s, Rosenquist often used nails as a motif to depict a period of personal difficulty. Rendered in black, nails refer to Rosenquist’s trauma and eventual renewal. The available painting is from that series and shows 20 nails, arranged to resemble four tally mark clusters. The auction also offers works from Vik Muniz, Jose Mijares, Pablo Bronstein, and John Fischer. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bonhams.

Living Contemporary
Highlighted in Rago’s upcoming Living Contemporary auction are two paintings by James Havard. An American painter and sculptor, Havard is a pioneer of the Abstract Illusionist movement that explored non-objective paintings that give the impression of three-dimensional space. He made his first forays into the Abstract Illusionist style in the 1970s. The following decade, he moved into figuration, creating works inspired by Art Brut masters such as Jean Dubuffet. Mixed media box constructions were another area of experimentation in his prolific 40-year career. The available works, titled Zuni and Zuni Heart Line, are three-dimensional abstract works, rendered in yellow, maroon, and blue. Leading the furniture lots is a pair of Sahara lounge chairs by Pierre Chapo. Born in Paris to a family of craftsmen, Pierre Chapo hoped to become an artist. However, after apprenticing with a navy carpenter, Chapo discovered a growing interest in architecture. Chapo was greatly inspired by Bauhaus and French designers such as Le Corbusier. Created in 1965, the offered chairs are made from elm and stitched saddle leather. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
