Peter Max is an Berlin-born American artist who fled Germany with his parents in 1938 to Shanghai, China where they lived for ten years, where he would be heavily inspired by the colors of the Buddhist temple across the street. He would move to New York City in 1953, and while working with friends creating commercial artwork for publications and advertising, his style would become associated with the counter culture, neo-expressionist, neo-fauvist, and psychedelic movements in graphic design during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He is known for using bursts of color, often containing much or all of the visible spectrum.
