An ape mask appliance from Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the iconic “Dawn of Man” sequence, apes discovered tools after encountering a massive black monolith. The apes’ facial appliances were designed by makeup artist Stuart Freeborn.
This original walnut-color foam latex ape appliance is mounted to a velvet-lined urethane display base. The appliance is in good overall condition, though the latex is fragile and exhibits some flaking and hardening from age.

Full moons call to us all especially as they rise low on the horizon. With ephemeral items; envelopes, book ends and threads, gold paper from ukulele strings, this imagined landscape resembles a much loved moonrise photo of mine.
Decorated with a pair of opposing dragons centering a flaming pearl on a ruyi patterned black ground, the lid with openwork decoration of bats and clouds and surmounted by a pierced dragon and cloud finial, all raised on the three applied feet topped with beast heads, original fitted wood stand.
