The very first bisque dolls were created by French doll makers sometime around the late 1950s. With time, they grew popular and sparked the interest of German doll makers. Finding their way to the collection of Antique and Other Fine Dolls auction by Alderfer Auction is a vibrant curation of 445 items. 

 The sale features pieces such as Mary Hoyer dolls with an estimated value of $80. When the production of bisque dolls started, most of them were designed to look like adults. Likewise, Mary Hoyer dolls display a sense of femininity as they were molded in a way that resembles the women of the period. Later on, the popularity of bisque dolls with child-like appearances began to rise among the collectors. The innocence of a child is well captured by an antique French bisque doll. The fine art selection features quality original paintings from old masters and contemporary artists alike. Among the striking and valuable works of contemporary art is an abstract piece by Paul Jenkins entitled “Phenomena Round Numbers.” Jenkins was an American abstract expressionist painter who first gained prominence in the 1950s in both New York and Europe. Jenkins experimented with his paints, pouring pigment in streams of various thicknesses and white linear overlays. Though he was best known as an abstract expressionist, Jenkins would at times call himself an “abstract phenomenist,” prefacing some of his titles with the word “phenomena.” Of his titles, he once said, “I have conversations with them, and they tell me what they want to be called.”

The antiques and decorative arts section of this sale includes oriental carpets, bronzes, lighting, Continental and American furniture, and more. Of the more unusual and rare items is an authentic Davy Crockett Coonskin Cap owned by Fess Parker. He was an American film and television actor best known for his portrayals of Davy Crockett in the Walt Disney TV mini-series. 

Also unusual to this auction is a 1985 Alpha Romeo Pininfarina (Spider), a two-seater roadster automobile with front engine and rear drive. The Italian firm of Pininfarina was responsible for the design, manufacturing of the body, as well as final assembly. Just over 5,000 cars were produced in this style in 1985.

Paul Evans Jr. (1931-1987) was a leading figure in the brutalist furniture movement of the 1960s and 70s. Teaming up with Directional Furniture, his creations of metal sculpted furniture set him apart. Evans’ 1970s Cityscape series was inspired by the Manhattan skyline, which boasted sleek, elegant surfaces. 

This brings us to the Paul Evans Stalagmite coffee table featured in Day 2 of the September 2019 Fall Fine Art and Chinese Sale presented by Sarasota Estate Auction. A pair of carved Chinese throne chairs were made during the Qing Dynasty, the final imperial dynasty in China. The Qing Dynasty ruled from 1636 until 1912, when it was succeeded by the Republic of China. The elegant throne chairs have thick sides and back rails depicting dragons.

Highlighted in the auction is a painting by Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953) titled “The Dog House.” This oil painting features a playful child inside the doghouse with their pet. Two enormous fossils will transport the viewer back to the Jurassic era and beyond: a pristine saber-tooth cat skull and a fearsome theropod dinosaur skull.
