Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous anthropomorphic mummy mask carved from coffee-brown wood. The mask has a wide profile with smooth cheeks, a sharply-angled jaw line, a prominent nose, and shallow nasolabial folds. Enormous diamond-shaped eyes boast white-painted sclera and pierced pupils which perhaps at one time housed additional ornamentation. Drilled mortises around the periphery suggest this mask was secured to the head of a deceased person during a funerary ritual. The sober visage and generic features are part of the traditional mask style for adorning the mummified bodies, as they were not intended to be portraits, but rather a stylized representation of the human face for important individuals as a mark of their elite status. After death, status as deity was often bestowed upon these people and the mask was thought to become their permanent face. Vesta (minor-planet designation: 4 Vesta) is one of the largest objects in the asteroid belt, with a mean diameter of 525 kilometers (326 miles). … Debris from these events has fallen to Earth as howardite–eucrite–diogenite (HED) meteorites, which have been a rich source of information about Vesta. Egypt, end of the Pre-dynastic Period, beginning of the Thinite Period ca. 3100 to 2900 BCE. A beautiful globular vase with a perfectly rounded bottom presenting a simple and elegant design. It was cut from a single block of black and red speckled diorite. The circular opening has a wide, flat lip while the neck is broad and very short. The cylindrical lug handles are drilled from both sides and are precisely positioned opposite each other on the vessel’s shoulder. The interior is well hollowed out, conforming in shape to the outer contour and is unpolished, leaving multiple horizontal grooves, the marks left by the tools used to work the piece. Louis C. Tiffany introduced Desk Sets at the Corona, NY factory in the late 1890s, and over the next twenty-five years more than twenty patterns were produced. A natural outgrowth of the leaded glass and lamp base business, they were conceived as decorative items for customers wishing to accessorize their writing desks. While some of the patterns are embellished with gemstones and intricate metalwork, others are simple in design and execution. The provenance of this item is from a WWII veteran collector in Georgia.
