20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale Morning Session

MAX ERNST

One of Sam Gilliam’s hallmark “drape paintings”  is available in the upcoming auction presented by Phillips Auction. Widening the limits of paintings, his work goes beyond the canvas. His stained fabric works resembling tie-dye are regarded as a major step in the development of American art.

The Morning Session of the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale features many mediums, from sculptures to abstract paintings. Among them, La France Open by Robert Motherwell stands out. Motherwell’s work is generally characterized by simple shapes, broad color contrasts, and gestural brushstrokes. This acrylic and charcoal on canvas piece was made around 1985. Roy Lichtenstein’s Brushstroke Head-IV bronze sculpture is of particular interest. A deconstructed female face emerges as the observer walks around the sculpture, and Ben-Day dots form eyelashes, an elongated nose, and pouting lips. La Ménagerie

FRANÇOIS-XAVIER LALANNE (1927-2008)

Throughout his career, French sculptor François-Xavier Lalanne merged the imaginative with the tactile. His dualpurpose furniture pieces reflect his artistic perspective; he once said, “It is, after all, easier to have a sculpture in an apartment than to have a real sheep. And, it’s even better if you can sit on it.” One of his furniture pieces, a brass and copper hippopotamus that expands to become a bathtub, is featured in the upcoming La Ménagerie sculpture auction offered by Christie’s. The sale follows the spirit of Lalanne, exploring twelve artists’ perspectives on animals.

Lots from Diego Giacometti, Alexander Calder, François Pompon, and others are included in this sale. In Rembrandt Bugatti’s Deux léopards marchan two bronze leopards walk in tandem. On the other side of the spectrum, the Dick Drake Mini Beast sculpture by the Haas brothers is both irreverent and imaginative. Made of Icelandic sheepskin, ebony, and bronze, this 2016 piece reflects the twin brothers’ sculptural skills and creative view of the animal world.
