(9) A Run of The San Francisco Oracle

(9) A Run of The San Francisco Oracle

(9) A Run of The San Francisco Oracle:

Venue: San Francisco Date: 1966-1968 Description: A run of nine of the underground newspaper published from September 20, 1966, to February 1968 in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. Allen Cohen (1940“2004), the editor during the paper’s most vibrant period, and Michael Bowen, the art director, were among the founders of the publication. Ron and Jay Thelin, owners of The Psychedelic Shop at 1535 Haight Street, were the financial backers and sometime managing editors of the periodical. The Psychedelic experience was meant to generate peace, love and good vibrations and the paper did not reflect this, so all involved kept debating and offering ideas until, by issue #4 when Allen Cohen and art director, Gabe Katz took hold of the creative reins, the Oracle started to become the voice of the community. The dynamic color covers began with Number 6, and the different printings may be identified by the variation in the colors. A complete run of the newspaper, such as this, with the variant printings, is very rare, and possibly unique to the market. Provenance: The Psychedelic Shop on Haight Street. Includes: ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. 16 pages. Vol. I, No. 3. Around Nov. 8, 1966. Lead article Hunters Point Love Rock. ¢ City of San Francisco Oracle. 24 pages. Vol. I, No. 5. Lead article On Programing the Psychedelic Experience. ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. Second printing of above, with variant colors on cover. ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. 32 pages. Vol. 1, No. 10. October 1967. Lead article A Call to Celebration. ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. 32 pages. Vol., No.11. No month, 1967. ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. 32 pages. Vol. One, No. 12. February 1968. Lead article 2000 A.D. Symposium with Alan Watts, Herman Kahn and Carl Rogers. ¢ The City of San Francisco Oracle. Winter. n.p., Lead article Variations on the Decay of Satire. Condition: Some minor darkening and wear to the paper, as is common, but very good or better; a rare run of this significant and influential underground newspaper.
