The Magic Collection of Jim Rawlins • III

The Magic Collection of Jim Rawlins • III

This third part of Jim Rawlins’ magic collection will be presented by Potter & Potter Auctions. Nearly 500 lots of vintage memorabilia are offered, including several works relating to Harry Houdini. Featured is a life-size bust of Houdini that was housed in Niagara Falls’ Houdini Museum of Magic. It is made of plasticine-clay and shows the stage performer in a jacket and bowtie. Another Houdini item of interest is a set of two pocket mirrors and small portraits. Fewer than ten of these miniature portraits—depicting Houdini and his wife, Bess—are known. Several pieces of wood, two nails, and a piece of broken glass from Houdini’s water torture cell are presented as well.

Memorabilia from other magicians will be available, including a watch mirror and pistol from David Bamberg. Better known by his stage name, Fu Manchu, Bamberg would place a borrowed watch in a cone at the end of his magician’s pistol. When fired at the small mirror, the glass would shatter to reveal the watch hanging from the frame. A Doug Henning jumpsuit is also included. The piece is decorated with a silver and red lightning bolt on light pink fabric. Henning wore the jumpsuit for publicity photographs around 1979. Post-War to Present

Robert Indiana (1928-2018) LOVE

Robert Indiana’s LOVE motif has become ingrained in American culture, recognizable in its simplicity and branding. However, the Pop artist struggled with the legacy he created: “Love bit me. It was a marvelous idea, but it was also a terrible mistake… it became too popular.” Two of Indiana’s LOVE paintings will be offered in the upcoming Post-War to Present auction, presented by Christie’s. Both were painted in 1967, following Indiana’s split with his on-again-off-again lover and his rising frustration with the Vietnam War. The Whitney Museum of American Art’s Barbara Haskell has explored Indiana’s conflict with his own work: “He saw it as a precarious image that came out of his disappointments in love—that tilted O suggests the instability of relationships.” One of the available paintings has the word written in red against a blue background, while the other is blue on a red background.

This auction presents work from contemporary artists alongside the artists of the 1950s and 60s. A 2012 acrylic painting by KAWS reflects the evolution of social commentary since Pop Art. The shaped canvas resembles a figure jumping from the ground with his arms thrust behind him. A smaller, circular canvas is placed below. KAWS’ work has seen increased attention in recent years, moving from the streets to galleries and museums. Another street artist featured in the sale is Eddie Martinez, a New-York based artist represented in the auction with three paintings. Martinez attributes his rapid painting method to his background in graffiti, noting the value of making precise strokes quickly and efficiently.

A selection of silkscreen prints from Andy Warhol will be offered, as well as a sculpture by Keith Haring, several pieces by Tom Wesselmann, and a lacquered wood screen by Roy Lichtenstein. Browse the full selection of post-war and contemporary art by visiting Christie’s website.

Furniture & Decorative Arts Auction

Modernist painter Alfred Henry Maurer’s work underwent multiple changes over his career. During his Realist period, he won the Carnegie Institute’s first prize for his oil painting titled An Arrangement. Later, Maurer transitioned from his usual style and became dedicated to painting in a Cubist and Fauvist style. The upcoming auction, to be presented by O’Gallerie, features a gouache-on-paper piece titled Standing Female Nude, attributed to Maurer. The auction also features a U.S. Model M1 Garand rifle, manufactured in 1944 with a 24-inch barrel. The M1 Garand was the first semi-automatic U.S. military rifle. Designed by John Garand during WWII, the M1 service rifle was a standard-issue.

Also showcased are diamond and gemstone jewelry pieces. Among them, a mixed-cut emerald, brilliant-cut diamond, and 14-karat gold ring is a highlight. An Indo-Serapi hand-knotted carpet is notable among the offered rugs and carpets. Decorated with red and blue floral designs and a central medallion, Serapi carpets are among the highest quality Heriz carpets. Also presented are paintings, Chinese porcelain, sculptures, modern and antique furniture, and coins. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Invaluable.
