A Rare North Carolina Inlaid Walnut Cellarette:

Roanoke River Basin, North Carolina, 1790-1810, possibly shop of Micajah Wilkes, with highly figured single board walnut top with astragal line inlay, opening to fitted interior, conforming stand fitted with single dovetailed drawer, on square legs with stretchers, back fitted with original locking toggle, brass drawer pull and carrying handles, retains three period blown glass gin bottles, one with period inscription “g/IW” or “9/IW”, 33-3/4 x 20-1/4 x 15 in.

Provenance: William A. Coffield of Edenton, North Carolina; to Johnston Pettigrew Coffield, born 1865; to Roberta ?Toots? Coffield Shackleton of Norfolk, Virginia; by gift to the consignor?s mother, circa 1980s

good condition and integrity overall, bed molding replaced, brasses replaced, case bottom reattached and with one small replaced section, bottle dividers replaced, typical shrinkage at top with some checking and very minor warping, lid with one section of beading replaced, other scattered minor flaws, formerly fitted with casters, now removed
