Giorgio de Chirico, a writer and artist, was the co-founder of the Metaphysical art movement, which influenced the Surrealists before World War I. Henry Dunay entered the jewelry industry at the age of 14 when he apprenticed for a New York goldsmith. Working on his passion for years, he sought to become an influential jewelry maker. In 1956, Dunay started his own company and began designing and selling his jewelry designs. A pair of Henry Dunay cufflinks will be featured in the upcoming Estate Of A Stock Broker auction, presented by Joshua Kodner. The 18-karat yellow gold cufflinks are set with rubies and are styled in a zodiac cancer sign. Alongside this lot is a diamond necklace with GIA-certified emerald drops.
Another highlighted lot is a pair of diamond and emerald earrings. A yellow diamond halo surrounds the emerald center stone, which weighs approximately 4.75 carats. Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was one of the most influential and prolific sculptors of the mid-19th century. He worked with materials ranging from porcelain to marble and pioneered new treatments of traditional themes. Carrier-Belleuse was also one of the first sculptors to organize public sales of his works at auction. Available in the upcoming Eclectic Collection of Estates Worldwide sale, presented by Akiba Antiques, is a bronze sculpture by Carrier-Belleuse titled La Liseuse. The sculpture shows a woman, clothed in black, reading a matching black book.
Another key item is from Cartier. The brand’s Santos wristwatch was created by Louis Cartier in 1904 to assist Alberto Santos, a Brazilian aviator, in easily viewing the time while flying a plane. In pre-Colombian Central America, frogs symbolized seasonal rainfall and fertility. Leaders often wore gold ornaments modeled after the animal to signal power and honor. Available in the upcoming Antiquities & Ethnographic Art sale, presented by Artemis Gallery, is a 55% gold frog amulet from ancient Panama. This detailed piece has two loops beneath the frog’s head where a chain can be threaded. Also available are several items from Mesoamerica’s Olmec civilization, including a terracotta baby figure. Though few artifacts survive, archaeologists identify the Olmec people as the frontrunners for both the Mayans and the Aztecs. The available sculpture has an elongated head and pronounced navel.
Several antique knives and weapons will also be included in the auction. Among these is an American steel knife that was owned by Bluford “Blue” Duck, an Oklahoma outlaw. Born in the Cherokee Nation, Duck spent several years committing robberies and holdups across the Western frontier. For a time, he famously partnered with Belle Starr, another notorious outlaw. This knife has a tapered, single-edged blade with a wooden handle. A Mexican steel knife from the 1830s is also featured. It has a carved bone handle and a small floral punch-out on the blade.
Two Pablo Picasso etchings from his Vollard Suite are offered as well. Ambroise Vollard, an influential French art dealer, commissioned 100 etchings during the 1930s. The artist was reportedly paid with original paintings from Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Trois Acteurs (Three Actors) #145 shows a bearded actor dressed in a traditional Shakespearean costume. The second piece, titled Modèle Contemplant un Groupe Sculpté (Model Contemplating a Sculptural Group) #175, depicts a kneeling woman reaching out to a sculpture of a rearing horse. Featured in the Estate Jewelry, Fine Art, and Antiques auction, presented by A. B. Levy’s, is an automatic tourbillon wristwatch from Audemars Piguet. The folding clasp, buckle, and other features of the watch are made of 18-karat pink gold. It was produced in 2007 to celebrate the 150th birthday of the Swiss company’s cofounder, Jules Audemars. Edward Piguet and Audemars were childhood friends but drifted apart in their teen years, both going on to become watchmakers for different manufacturers. The two later reconnected and worked together to found Audemars Piguet & Cie, now Audemars Piguet, in 1881.

Gary Combs, a Manhattan autograph dealer known for finding manuscripts, documents, and letters for several prominent collectors, started his career in the mid-1970s as a salesman. When his store closed in the late 1980s, Combs bought several autographed items and opened a specialized company. The letter, dated April 14, 1799, was written during the buildup of troops during the XYZ Affair.

The upcoming Arms and Armor: Live Auction, offered by Cowan’s Auctions, presents a variety of classic revolvers and other guns. Included in the sale is a Texas Colt Paterson with an extra cylinder serial. Commonly known as the Texas Paterson because of its association with the Texas Ranger, this revolver has a distinctive .36 caliber octagon barrel, five-shot cylinder, and flared walnut grip. The five-shot Paterson revolver became especially popular on the Western frontier. This lot has an original blue frame and gray metal cylinders.
The sale also offers a percussion revolver made by Thomas W. Cofer. The earliest examples of guns bearing Cofer’s name are shotguns made before the Civil War. The available item features a spur trigger with no guard, along with a single action and spur trigger. Roberto Sebastian Matta was an Abstract Expressionist best known for his oil paintings. Matta’s art evolved from sketch drawings to his oil work, including his Inscape series. The mechanical lines and graphic effects in his works reflect the influence of contemporary European artist Marcel Duchamp.
