Decoy & Sporting Art Sale | Session One

Incredibly executed working mallard drake in a tucked head resting pose, Ferdinand Homme, Stoughton, Wisconsin, circa 1930.

Guyette and Deeter present over 300 decoys and sporting-themed works of art in their upcoming auction. Among the featured lots is a mallard drake decoy produced by Ferdinand Homme in the 1930s. Along with his younger brother, Homme carved decoys and was a regular waterfowl hunter in Stoughton, Wisconsin. This mallard drake rests its head in a tucked pose. Details of the lot include scalloped wings and tail. Decoy collectors can also consider another mallard, in this case, a hen and drake set, crafted by Harvey Stevens. In 1876, Stevens, already a respected cabinetmaker and taxidermist, began his career as a decoy maker with this magazine ad: “Decoy Ducks — Send For Price List — Best In The World.” Distinctive features of this mallard set include a tail feather curl on the drake.

Beyond decoys, bidders will also find a model Kennebec “open gunwale” canoe. The Kennebec Boat and Canoe Company was founded in 1909 by former railroad station agent and ice cutter George F. Terry. The firm produced canoes until 1941. Those interested in this or any other lot can register to bid on Bidsquare.

Founders & Patriots

HISTORY OF DEWEES PENNSYLVANIA LINE DRUMMER BOY AND PENNSYLVANIA IN THE REVOLUTION

The upcoming Founders & Patriots auction, presented by Morphy Auctions, offers a variety of arms, militaria, documents, and other items from the era of the American Revolutionary War as well as the War of 1812. Included in the sale is a historic silver-mounted tomahawk. The piece was presented as part of the “Clash of Empires: The British, French & Indian War, 1754-1763” exhibit at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This particular lot was inscribed with the name of Lieutenant John McCellan, a rifleman during the Revolutionary War. At that time, riflemen were required to carry a second weapon or tomahawk, as their rifles were not equipped with bayonets. The available item’s blade has a distinctive crescent edge and a shell design at the top.

The sale also offers a pair of silver-mounted pistols presented by George Washington to Captain James Chambers. To show his admiration for Chambers’ service during the Revolution, Washington presented the family with this gift of matching pistols. According to the notarized statement, the pistols have been a valued heirloom in the family for many years. They were made around 1775 by noted English gunsmith Thomas Ketland. This auction also features one of only three Fort Pitt horns. Engraved by the artist commonly known as the “Pointed Tree Carver,” this horn bears the British Great Seal. Below the seal, it depicts a hunter and his hounds chasing a deer and a hare. View more items and register to bid on Morphy Auctions.

One of the key lots showcased in the upcoming Silver & Vertu auction, offered by Rago, is a seven-piece tea and coffee service by Samuel Kirk & Son. The set features a floral repoussé decoration with a heron, dragonfly, and fish, along with Chinese figural finials. Asian Art & Antiques – Ceramics and Works of Art

Chinese Flambe Vase, 18th Century

Blue-colored ceramics gained significance in China during the Tang dynasty. The blue-glazed porcelain pieces got their distinctive color from cobalt, imported from Persia. At the time, cobalt was scarce and only used in limited quantities. Blue and white pottery and porcelain gained broader recognition during the Qing dynasty. A pair of blue and white porcelain bowls are among the featured items in the upcoming Asian Art & Antiques – Ceramics and Works of Art sale, presented by Oakridge Auction Gallery

Flambé glaze, popularized during the Qing dynasty, is also highlighted. The emperor at the time, Yongzheng, commissioned potters at the imperial factory to recreate the Jun ware of the Song dynasty. However, instead of recreating the classic Jun ware, the potters accidentally produced a new glaze with red and blue streaks. An Imperial Chinese flambé vase with a Xianfeng mark at the bottom is a featured lot. The vase has a quatrefoil-shaped mouth and bears relief impressions of a peach on the front and back. Completing the auction is an early 20th-century Yixing teapot with a lion on the lid. To view these items, visit Bidsquare.
