The Summer International Fine Art Auction

Elena Jahn (Am. 1938-2014) - Moon, Water, Rocks-Monhegan, Maine 1963 - Oil on canvas

Gertrude Fiske was the first female artist appointed to the Massachusetts State Art Commission in 1929. A Boston native, she was a local leader who encouraged creativity and regular practice. In her works, women were portrayed in a more powerful way than they were socially perceived. Her landscape and still life paintings are notable as well. A piece titled The Carpenter won her the Thomas B. Clarke prize from the National Academy of Design. Fiske’s landscape works often took inspiration from the coastal areas where she resided. Among these is a painting titled Turbat’s Creek, which is featured in Barridoff Galleries’ upcoming Summer International Fine Art Auction.

Another artist inspired by the coastal life was Amos Ferguson. One of his cardboard works titled Man in Sailboat, Woman Fishing will be featured in this summer sale. The painting uses the color and imagery of tropical Bahamian surroundings. Ferguson often claimed, “I paint by faith, not by sight.” His paintings have recently begun increasing in popularity. Traditional Fine Furniture with a Modern Twist

CENTER TABLE

With the influence of the Modernism movement, interior design has undergone a significant shift. Furniture gradually drifted away from traditional forms and took on more minimalistic styles. This movement would remain popular through the 1950s and 1960s. The upcoming Stash by Lee Stanton auction presents a selection of furniture that blends traditional and modern styles of craftsmanship.

Available to bidders is a 19th-century English partner’s desk. Produced in 1820, the piece is made of mahogany wood. Also carved in mahogany is a Louis XVI fauteuil from George Jacob. A noted Parisian designer active during the reign of Napoleon I, Jacob’s furniture was closely associated with the French Neoclassical style. His works have been seen on display at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. Highlighted among the 385 lots offered in the sale is an early 19th-century bookcase that also serves as a display cabinet. Other available furnishings include coffee tables, pool tables, sofas, reclining chairs, and more. View lot descriptions for more information and register to bid on Bidsquare.

The Kolar Collection

Slip-decorated Glazed Redware Plate

This August, Skinner is set to offer items ranging from carvings to porcelain in the upcoming Kolar Collection auction. One of the standout lots is an early 19th-century tall case clock. With an angel at the top, the piece has a glazed tombstone door that opens to a wooden dial. The clock is likely from Riley Whiting, a Connecticut-based firm recognized for its wooden gear movements. The sale also includes a red-painted dome-top box from a group of anonymous artisans collectively known as the “Compass Artist.” Their works demonstrate a cohesive decorative tradition. The Chipstone Foundation writes that though “… the identity of the Compass Artist remains elusive, a study on their construction, decoration, and ownership has provided insight into material life in rural Pennsylvania German communities.”

Further showcased in this auction is a gilded copper weathervane from 1890. The piece is attributed to J.L. Mott Iron Works, a company founded by Jordan L. Mott and continued by his son. The weathervane depicts a trotting horse drawing a vehicle. Another highlighted lot is a walnut chest of drawers in the Queen Anne style. Ancient Coins featuring the Glacier Rams Solidi Collection – Session B

CELTIC BRITAIN. Trinovantes & Catuvellauni. Uninscribed. AV Stater.jpg

Lydia was a well-known center for trade and commerce and was also considered one of the first kingdoms in the world to issue coins, called staters, as currency. They were first introduced to the Lydian empire during the rule of King Alyattes between 619 and 560 BCE. The Lydian stater was primarily composed of electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver. They were later altered to be pure gold. The upcoming Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction highlights a Lydian stater made between 561 and 546 BCE. The coin features a lion with raging teeth, roaring at a bowed bull.

Among the Roman Empire coinage showcased is an aureus of Maximian. During Maximian’s rule, many emperors opted for dual leadership to solve disputes and share the workload. In the dual system coinage, the leader with dominance and control used the symbol of Jupiter. The emperor performing the courageous tasks was assigned the symbol of Hercules. The available  286 – 310 CE aureus features the laureate Maximian in draped and cuirassed bust on the front. On the reverse is a seated Hercules with a club, quiver, and bow. The auction also offers ancient Egyptian, Persian, and Italian coins. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Stack’s Bowers Galleries.

Art of Asia | Antiquity to Present Day

Early 20th C. Chinese White Jade Pendant Twin Dragons

Gandhara is the ancient name of a region in northwest Pakistan bounded by the Hindu Kush mountain range and the Himalayas. The Gandharan Empire made itself wealthy in part by controlling trade between China and the Mediterranean Sea; a great deal of this wealth went into local patronage of artisans and artists. In the first century CE, Buddhism became popular among Gandharan elites, making them some of the most powerful Buddhist patrons in South Asia. A long Gandharan schist frieze will be highlighted in the upcoming Art of Asia | Antiquity to Present Day auction, presented by Artemis Gallery. This carved relief stone panel features a scene of seated Buddhas, attendants, and classically-inspired architectural features.

Blue pottery, also known as “Kaashi Gari,” was introduced in Multan by artisans who came with Arab conqueror Muhammad Bin Qasim. Archaeologists believe that this art has roots in the Kashan city of Persia and the Kashgar city of China. A 19th-century Kaashi Gari vessel is among the key lots. The glazed ceramic vessel features traditional leaf-like motifs adorning the neck, mouth, handles, and tiered base. Its body bears two well-modeled wild felines, one pinning the other on its back. The Violet Taaffe Estate

Armin Carl Hansen (1886 - 1957)

In the early 20th century, while many photographers began to favor the clean modernism of Group f/64 (an artist collective based in San Fransisco), William Mortensen favored Pictorialism. Active during the same period as Group f/64, he endured significant criticism for his dark, romantic, and mystical works as a result. He often explored themes of death, psychology, and American cinema. Mortensen published several books defending his style and giving tutorials in posing, as well as numerous photography portfolios. One such collection of 23 Mortensen photos will be available in the upcoming Turner Auctions + Appraisals event. Each of the prints was made using the bromoil printing process. This sale highlights items from the estate of Violet Taaffe, an established San Francisco resident, and art collector. Taaffe was also a social worker, teacher, and active community member.

Among the auction’s offerings are etchings from Armin Carl Hansen, a California artist known for his seascapes and portraits of fishermen. Cosimo Aiello, Man of the Sea is among the key Hansen works on offer. It shows the head and shoulders of a fisherman in profile as he squints into the distance. The subjects of the artist’s other available etchings include sinking ships, Belgian farm scenes, and busy harbors.

Platinum and diamond jewelry lots, including a solitaire ring and vintage clip earrings, are featured as well. More contemporary jewelry pieces in the catalog include a pair of 18-karat gold and enamel leopard earrings from Charles Garnier and a selection of gold charm bracelets. A pair of 18th or 19th-century Chinese cloisonné lidded censers, early 20th-century silver teapots, and several Japanese bronze sculptures round out this auction.
