1862 $3 State of Missouri Civil War Banknote

1862 $3 State of Missouri Civil War Banknote:

Original 1862 $3 banknote issued by the State of Missouri during the Civil War period. Dated January 1, 1862, this obsolete currency note features the denomination boldly overprinted in green with the word “THREE” at center. The top section presents a finely detailed engraved portrait of Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson, flanked by flags and symbolic allegorical figures. In the upper corners, the numeral “3” is prominently displayed, surrounded by ornamental border designs. The left vignette below the numeral depicts a standing allegorical female figure with spear and shield, while the lower portion of the note reads: “Jefferson City, January 1, 1862.” and “The State of Missouri will pay THREE DOLLARS to bearer.” This note was intended to be redeemable “Three Years After Date,” as indicated around the portrait. Printed in a combination of black ink and green overprint, this piece of Confederate-era currency is an example of Missouri’s emergency Civil War banking issues. The note shows significant wear consistent with age and circulation, with multiple fold lines, edge losses, stains, and paper thinning visible throughout. Partial handwritten numerals and inscriptions are still evident. A notable piece of American financial and Civil War history, reflective of Missouri’s unique role as a border state issuing its own script during a time of economic strain and political division.
