Wedgwood Porcelain Dinnerware and 17th-Century Goddess Statues Highlight Willow Auction House’s Upcoming Sale

115 Piece Wedgwood Cuckoo Porcelain Dinnerware

Established in 1759, Wedgwood is a manufacturer of fine china, porcelain, and luxury accessories. The English company began producing porcelain a couple of decades after its inception. Owing to its founder-potter Josiah Wedgwood’s enterprising ideas, its porcelain went on to become the Queen’s favorite. Josiah modified the 18th-century creamware with a refreshing bluish-white tint. The Queen grew so fond of this porcelain that it was soon known as ‘Queens’s ware.’ A 115-piece Wedgwood porcelain dinnerware set, adorned with a cuckoo pattern, is a key highlight of the upcoming Willow Auction House sale. The late 20th/early 21st-century service set includes 35 dinner plates, 13 soup bowls, a sugar and creamer, a gravy boat, and an underplate, among others. Another notable dinnerware lot is a sterling bowl and compote pair by Tiffany. Although compotes were originally used to serve a French dish, they are also valued today for their design and artistry.

A pair of 17th-century gilt wood statues of the goddesses Minerva and Themis also leads the listings. Each statue measures over 30 inches tall. While Themis personifies justice in Greek myths, Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, medicine, and the arts. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit LiveAuctioneers

Americana Between the Boards From Potter & Potter

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain

Perhaps best known for both capturing Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War and founding the state of Vermont, Ethan Allen also led a failed attempt into Montreal that resulted in his capture by British authorities. Imprisoned aboard Royal Navy ships, he was released in a prisoner exchange in 1778. Allen later wrote a detailed account of his imprisonment that was published in 1779. A rare second edition copy of this narrative features in the upcoming sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts from Potter & Potter Auctions. The available edition is thought to be the last and only copy offered at auction in over a century.

The sale also includes a pristine copy of the first American edition of Huckleberry Finn and an Albert Einstein letter to mathematical physicist Daniel M. Lipkin, critiquing a set of his equations. Bidders will find a number of fine press editions including titles from Kelmscott Press, Doves Press, the Limited Editions Club, and more. Beyond books and manuscripts, there are also early stock certificates from Standard Oil, a group of awards won by American science fiction author Frederick Pohl, six fine early maps, and more. Custom Mid-Century Nupe African Door, Baule Chair Featured in Tribal Art Auction

Mid-Century Nupe African Door on Custom Metal Base 46" – Nigeria

A Nigerian custom mid-century Nupe door and a handcrafted Baule chair from the Ivory Coast are among the notable sub-Saharan African works in the upcoming Discover African Art auction. The African Nupe people have resided along the banks of the Niger River since the 15th century CE. Many of their traditions have changed or faded out after being overpowered by Fulani Muslims in the early 1800s, though Nupe culture still exists in Nigeria today. Many Nupe tribal homes feature handcrafted doors and posts carved with geometric designs. One such door is featured in this Discover African Art auction. The hand-carved wooden door stands 46.5 inches tall and weighs 31.5 pounds with its custom base.

A dispute around 300 years ago between Baule’s queen and the Asante king caused many of the Baule people to follow their leader from Ghana to Côte d’Ivoire, or Ivory Coast. Even after this migration, the Baule people have continued to thrive. This is partially due to the Baule’s significant contributions to African art traditions. Representing this tradition in the auction is a handcrafted Baule chair weighing approximately 30 pounds. View these items and more and register to bid by visiting Bidsquare.
