Slung around the waist of warriors, inro cases were designed during the Edo period in 19th-century Japan to carry small, valuable items. Today, inro cases are rarer and more valuable than the things they once carried. In the Strong Diversions: Property from a Lifetime of Play auction at Hindman, a large Japanese inro case will be available. The gold, red, and black lacquer piece is 15 centimeters long with three smaller compartments. Apart from its gold decoration, the other unique character is its suite of armor shapes. A Romano-Egyptian cartonnage mummy mask (circa 2nd century CE) is a key highlight of the upcoming Exceptional Antiquities Ethnographic Fine Art auction from Artemis Gallery. In ancient Egypt, funerary masks and cases were made of cartonnage material. Linen or papyrus scraps stuck together with resin or plaster was used for mummification. Made of gesso-lined linen cartonnage, this “Egyptian Group” mask depicts the face of a young woman. It portrays tranquil features such as almond-shaped eyes with thick lashes, full lips, and the head extending out and downwards.

Known for his artistic works during the American Revolutionary War era, Charles Willson Peale’s (1741 – 1827) most notable work was Sitting of 1779. This full-length portrait of General George Washington at Princeton can be found at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A noted painter of the Qing dynasty, Zhu Xubai left the imperial army to become a monk and took the name Xu Gu. He hopped between cities in an attempt to sell his paintings. Although Xu Gu had been trained in a portrait shop to portray realistic images, several of his paintings show little evidence of this style. His artistry was in employing light colors to illustrate the forms of his composition.
