Splendid large oil on canvas by Russian-Israeli Contemporary Impressionist artist Leonid Afremov. He is reputed for paintings rich color combinations and textures achieved from thick and thin paint applications and for his masterful use of palette knife that adds relief. Afremov paints a seemingly incongruous city scene where a white horse turns towards the viewer that Afremov painted with dabs of soft pinks, ranges of whites, light browns and burnt oranges. Outstanding oil on canvas by pioneer Abstract Expressionist artist Olga Albizu, the first woman in Puerto Rico to paint Non-Representational art. A student of German painter Hans Hofmann, she unites bold and primary colors to achieve a push and pull visual effect to ignite an emotive response in the viewer. On a cobalt background, Albizu applied splendid fields of azure, sapphire, and cyan with deep purple, scarlet red, warm yellow and black that appear to float on the canvas. Jozsef Koszta (Hungarian, 1861 – 1949) Attributed: Floral Still Life, c. 1920’s. Oil on canvas board, signed lower right, framed.
Jozsef Koszta was active and lived in Hungary. Working in the realism school, he focused heavily on images depicting peasant life, utilizing strong tonal colors and emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow. Particularly as his work progressed, he explored the pop of bright color against dark background. His prolific body of work includes portraits, genre paintings, still life and landscapes.
