Walking Liber Half Dollars and Remington Firearms Come to Sale With Blackwell Auctions

176 Walking Liberty Half Dollars.

The Walking Liberty half dollar was the creation of expert engraver Adolph A. Weinman. The coins were in circulation in the United States from 1916 to 1947. Robert W. Woolley, the new United States Mint Director at the time, wanted to replace the Barber coinage after his appointment in 1915. Woolley suggested the Commission of Fine Arts hold a competition to invite new coin designs. The committee assigned Weinman’s creation to a half dollar and dime. However, these designs did not strike well, leading to their discontinuation in 1947. The upcoming sale by Blackwell Auctions presents a single lot of 176 Walking Liberty half dollars. According to Cornelius Vermeule, a notable art historian and classical art curator, these pieces are “the most beautiful American coins.”

Also featured in the sale is a Remington 870 Wingmaster shotgun with MOD barrel. The Remington pump-action shotguns found applications for hunting, self-defense, and shooting sports. They were famous for their reliable construction, easy maintenance, and affordability, making them the best-selling shotgun in history. Another highlight of the auction is a Moorcroft pottery handled vase featuring signature floral patterns and organic lines. Moorcroft pottery articles are sought-after for their nature-inspired designs. They also feature handwritten signatures and Moorcroft stamps of authenticity. The auction also offers a luxury chess set by Studio Anne Carlton, gold and diamond jewelry, a Waltham sterling pocket watch, and Japanese cloisonné vases. Andy Warhol, Campbell's Soup I, Tomato F&S

Andy Warhol once said of Campbell’s Soup, the subject of some of his most well-known Pop Art pieces: “I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.” The original Campbell’s works were all hand-painted and hand-stamped. Soon after they were shown, Warhol began to use the photo-silkscreen process that became a signifier of his work. One of Andy Warhol’s tomato soup can silkscreens (numbered 44 / 250) is featured in the upcoming Important Fine Art and Design sale, offered by Auctions at Showplace.

Edward F. Caldwell & Co. Ormolu Torchères, Madame Du Barry Porcelain Available at Christie’s

A Monumental Pair Of American Ormolu-mounted White And Portor Marble Torcheres

Christie’s online English & European Furniture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art auction will spotlight a 17th-century porcelain plate made for Madame Du Barry, the last mistress of King Louis XV of France. She was a commoner who had multiple lovers before she met King Louis XV. Her entry to the French royal court as maîtresse-en-titer was nothing short of a scandal. She was hastily married to Comte Guillaume du Barry with a false birth certificate. The smitten King requested many Parisian artists to create things for Madame Du Barry, one of which was this porcelain plate from a service made especially for her. The center has a “DB” monogram in gilt and flower garlands with a band of gilt husks to the well. The rim features heavenly putti in clouds that alternate with baskets of flowers and berried myrtle wreaths. The blue-ground rim has zig-zagging gilt bands.

Among decorative art, an untitled printed metal collage on wood by Tony Berlant stands out. The printed metal exteriors are pieced together with metal hardware. The blue background contrasts with the cluster of bright orange and peach-colored circles. Berlant’s precise use of images and fragments in his works create unique experiences for viewers. From Chinese famille rose porcelain to engravings in the style of Angelika Kauffman, Christie’s’ New York will present a wide array of fine and decorative arts dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Italian Sculpture and German 3D Collage Lead Alex Cooper Auctioneers’ Upcoming Sale

Matteo Pugliese Title: Samurai Guardian V

Milan-born sculptor Matteo Pugliese lived in Sardinia with his family for 12 years. During this period, he took to sculpture and drawing in a major way. Pugliese’s works are a combination of classic and modern styles. The sculptor’s Guardians series represents men from mostly Asian cultures geared with weapons to defend their land. Samurai Guardian V, a bronze and terracotta piece belonging to the series, is a key highlight at the upcoming sale from Alex Cooper Auctioneers. With a serious yet calm expression on his face, the warrior is armed and armored. The weapon, however, is a symbol of his inner defense rather than an expression of aggression.

Leading the fine art listings is John Pierce Barnes’ unframed oil on canvas painting. While the artist explored varied styles, he is best remembered for his Impressionist portraits and landscapes. This vibrant portrait characterizes his mastery over Impressionism. Another noteworthy artwork in the sale is Ursula Schultze-Bluhm’s untitled three-dimensional collage in mixed media. The wall-mount sculpture features a painted frame adorned with bottle caps, doll parts, toy animals, beads, and labels. Memories and fantasies significantly influenced the German painter’s Surrealist art. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Alex Cooper Auctioneers.

Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Frida Kahlo Paintings Lead Fall Auction by 500 Gallery

Claude Monet, Attributed: Personnage au Chapeau

Claude Monet, a founder of Impressionism, wanted to remain anonymous most of his life and just paint. As a budding artist, Monet was part of a young group of painters that included Sisley, Renoir, and Cézanne. They were termed the “Impressionists” based on the incomplete-looking, individual strokes of their nouveau paintings. It was something the art world of the late 1800s had never seen before. Monet mastered the art of Impressionism, and he created his most loved and known water lily paintings before he was visually impaired. A painting attributed to Claude Monet depicting a young woman basking in the sun while wearing a hat is among the leading lots in the upcoming fall auction, presented by 500 Gallery. The front pencil monogram reads “Cl. M.”
The rocky island of Monhegan is a source of inspiration for many renowned painters. One of those painters was Rockwell Kent, who was also an illustrator and an advertising artist. Kent was also in the limelight when his suspected lover, Sally Maynard Moran, disappeared from the island where he and his wife lived in 1953. This sale will feature a letter to a fan from Rockwell Kent. The typed and hand-signed letter was sent from Kent to a fan named Miss Metcalf in 1963. The sale also offers a selection of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures by master artists. Notable names include Wassily Kandinsky, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Otto Dix, Sam Francis, and Andy Warhol. Find the listed items and more online auctions on Bidsquare.
