Antique Queen Anne Chests and Cabinets Come to Auction in Home & Interiors Sale by Bonhams
Oct 03, 2022 10:00 PDTThe furniture style that developed during the reign of Queen Anne was characterized by smaller size, lighter weight, and greater comfort compared to its predecessors. One such Queen Anne bonnet top high chest is a key highlight of the upcoming auction from Bonhams. Carved from cherry wood, the chest has minimal ornamentation unlike the veneers and inlays of the 17th century. Another noteworthy furniture lot is a pair of George III gilt and painted wood pier tables. Inspired by the art and architecture of Italy, it has a well-balanced design with an emphasis on refinement. Also of interest is a pair of George II giltwood girandole mirrors, crafted in the manner of Thomas Chippendale. Girandole was a popular design issued by the London-based cabinetmaker; the objects were created in the French fashion. The sale features a parcel ebonized bronze mounted bookcase cabinet in the style of Robert Herring. This Regency-era piece is made of mahogany, which was the primary choice of wood during the period.
A Japanese lacquered storage chest belonging to the Edo period (1615 – 1868) also leads the listings. Its geometric borders and abstracted foliage motifs are depicted using gold lacquer. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Bonhams.
