Danish Candelabra by Johan Rohde for Georg Jensen and English Table Service Silverware Come to Sale With HindmanOct 10, 2022 10:00 CDT
Georg Jensen’s collaboration with Danish painter and lithographer Johan Rohde was the most significant association in the history of the company. Rohde’s unique vision further enhanced the company’s focus on silverware. A pair of Johan Rohde silver five-light candelabra for Georg Jensen is a key highlight of the upcoming Dining at Home auction, presented by Hindman. The pieces have a “Sterling” stamp and other markings on the underside. Rohde’s design combines the company’s hallmark characteristics and his interpretation of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Another noteworthy silver five-light candelabra pair in the sale is by Tiffany and Co. The circa 1895 candle holders have a vintage design featuring square bases and detailed adornment.
Two 19th-century English table service silver items lead the catalog. One is a pair of George III entrée dishes with engraved shield crests and griffon knops. The dishes are marked with “Paul Storr,” “William Burwash,” and “William Sibley.” An entrée in modern dining is a dish served prior to the main course during a meal. Another English serving item of interest is an intricately ornamented William IV tureen. It comprises a cover and an American coin soup ladle.
