Texas Icon William “bill” Wittliff’s Estate To Be Sold At Auction

SAN ANTONIO – The partial personal estate of iconic Texan photographer, screenwriter, and publisher William “Bill” Wittliff will be sold at auction on November 11, 2023 at Vogt Auction Galleries in San Antonio, Texas.

The auction will include approximately 300 items from Wittliff’s Austin, Texas studio and home as well as the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and features his famous Lonesome Dove photographs of Robert Duvall as Augustus “Gus” McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call, mementoes of his many other Hollywood productions including Barbarosa (starring Wille Nelson), The Black Stallion, and The Perfect Storm, props from the set of Lonesome Dove, rare copies of books published by Wittliff’s Encino Press imprint including authors such as Larry McMurtry, Bud Shrake, J. Frank Dobie, and John Graves, photography from his Vaquero and La Vida Brinca series, Wittliff’s cameras and other studio equipment, firearms, and personal effects.

The auction will take place on Saturday, November 11, beginning at 1pm Central at Vogt’s auction facility at 7233 Blanco Road in San Antonio.
