Stunning Selections: Billings’ March 28th SPRING 2026 MODERN ART + DESIGN Sale

Billings, of Los Angeles, CA is presenting its 425 lot SPRING 2026 MODERN ART + DESIGN sale on March 12th, 2025, starting at 1:00PM EDT. This premier event offers a fine collection of 20th and 21st century furnishings, as well as functional and decorative temptations, all with universal and timeless appeal. Here are some highlights that caught the eye of the Auction Daily editors.

This sale offers premier selections of sculptures and decorative elements. Lot #10, Vasa’s (Vasa Velizar Mihich, b. 1933 in the former Yugoslavia), Big Block sculpture, is estimated at $7,000-9,000. This laminated acrylic work from 1989 measures 36″ H x 48″ W x 7″ D and is primarily executed in shades of purple, pink, and orange. It sits upon a custom birch plinth, increasing its overall measurements to 72″ H x 72″ W x 14″ D. It is incised 2936 Vasa C 1989 on one of its lower corners. 

Vasa, who is both an artist and an academic, is a leader in the Color Field movement. He is best known for his geometric sculptures made from acrylic materials that bend and reflect light. His work has been featured in numerous museums across the globe, including those in Belgrade, San Diego, and Palm Springs. In February 2026, Los Angeles Modern Auctions of Los Angeles, CA sold lot #186, Vasa’s Six Columns, for $85,800.

Eye-catching seating is another top category in this exciting early spring sale. Lot #132, a Sleigh hammock chair by American artist and craftsman William C. Leete, is estimated at $3,000-5,000. This 37-1/2″ H x 28″ W x 77″ D example is made from red oak and nylon cording and was studio produced in the USA in the 1970s. It was featured in Dona Z. Meilach’s 1981 Creating Modern Furniture – Trends, Techniques, Appreciation on pages 176-177. 

Leete was very active in the 1970s. His signature design elements included laminated, curved wood and macrame, much like this Sleigh chair on offer from Billings. He took great pride in his production, often personally repairing or restoring his own works when they required upkeep.

Also on offer is a fine collection of furnishings by legacy Swiss designer and architect Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967). Lot #55, a Jeanneret file rack, is estimated at $6,000-8,000. This dark stained, rectangular teak unit measures 32.5″ H x 49.5″ W x 14″ and was produced in France and India for the Administrative Buildings at Punjab University in Chandigarh, India around 1957. It retains its stenciled marking along a top edge. 

This rack was designed specifically to compliment the environment and architecture of a series of midcentury buildings located in Chandigarh in northern India. Jeanneret and his team were responsible for that area’s urban planning, including living, administrative, and academic structures, as well as outdoor spaces and destinations. In September 2024, Piasa of Paris, France sold lot #36, Jeanneret’s Library Table, for €117,000.

Tables of all sorts are well represented in this well curated event. Lot #185, a coffee table by Milo Baughman, is estimated at $3,000 – $5,000. This midcentury-era delight measures 13-3/4″ H x 47-1/2″ W x 29-3/4″ D and was produced by Glen of California. It is made from walnut, glass, lacquered Masonite, aluminum, and steel and features covered and open spaces, as well as a small container suitable for plants. 

Glen of California was based in Arcadia, CA and was known for its high quality, mid-century modern furniture manufacturing in the 1940s and 1950s. American furniture designer Milo Baughman (1923–2003), a leader in the California Modern design movement, worked with Glen in the 1950s. His production was known for not only its quality and geometric forms, but also its signature materials, including walnut, brass, and Formica. In June 2024, Luxurious Treasures of Pasadena, CA sold lot #257, a midcentury rosewood dining table by Glen of California, for $3,200.

Sofas, lighting, and other outstanding, category spanning selections bring this sale full circle. Lot #278, George Smith Style’s Dog Kennel Bed sofa, is estimated at $2,000 – $3,000.  This shapely couch measures 35″ H x 96″ W x 36″ D, with an 18″ seat height. It was produced in the 2000s and made from tufted green velvet with mahogany turned legs.
