Lark Mason Associates Announces A Trio of Asian Art Auctions With Previews During Asia Week New York

Though the majority of Asian art auctions have been re-scheduled to mid-June, Lark Mason Associates will open its doors during Asia Week New York to preview three major sales. The first– Chinese Export Porcelain and Works of Art from an American Collector– will open for bidding on www.igavelauctions.com starting March 31-April 21st,, with the second one– Asian, Ancient, Ethnographic Works of Art– commencing on April 2-23rd.  Rounding out the schedule is Property from the Collection of Dr. Isidore Cohn, Jr. and Other Owners will start June 18-July 8. All works of art will be on preview at the iGavel salesroom, 229 East 120th Street, during Asia Week New York.

“We are open for anyone who wants to preview our sales,” says Lark Mason. “Taken collectively they include many important Asian works of art and will appeal to a broad base of collectors.”

Some of the major highlights in Chinese Export Porcelain and Works of Art from an American Collector include a finely painted 18th Export Hong Bowl (estimate: $15,000-25,000), illustrating the merchant houses of Canton, made in limited quantities for the western merchants active in Canton for the China Trade; a fine gilded bronze vessel by Hu Wenming, a Chinese bronze artisan whose works created during the late Ming dynasty, featuring his signature imagery of mythical creatures in a band across the swelled body (Estimate: $3,000 to $5,000); and a selection of seven 18th century Himalayan gilt bronzes with a highlight Hayagriva and Consort, with the group estimated to realize over $50,000.

According to Mason, of the approximately 150 lots offered in this sale, a large number of the items were purchased from such venerable firms as S. Marchant & Son, Philip Suvall, E & J Frankel, Joseph and Earl D.Vandekar, the Sotheby’s 1940’s Yamanaka Collection, and Ralph M. Chait Galleries.

Highlights from the Asian, Ancient, Ethnographic Works of Art sale include: a pair of cloisonné and gilt bronze scrolls in a fitted huanghuali box, dating to the Qing dynasty (Estimate: $10,000- 15,000) and an archaic style ewer with cloisonne´ stand dating to the late Qing dynasty (Estimate: $15,000-20,000).

The third sale– from the Property from the Collection of Dr. Isidore Cohn and Other Owners– features numerous important jade objects including a late 17th or early 18th century celadon jade scholars rock carved as an upright mountain with a C.T. Loo provenance dating to 1942 (estimate: $200,000-300,000);  a greenish-white nephrite jade Rhyton cup (Estimate: $400,000-600,000); a white jade bowl (Estimate: $250,000-350,000); a white Nephrite jade teapot (Estimate:$150,000-200,000); and a white jade reclining deer (Estimate:$70,000-100,000).

Complementing the jade works is an impressive array of furniture, which includes: a pair of 18th century Chinese incised and colored lacquer demi-lune tables (Estimate: $50,000-100,000); a Qing dynasty Chinese white jade tripod censer with Buddhistic lion-form feet and a carved wood stand (Estimate: $30,000-40,000); and a Qianlong Period Chinese Zitan table cabinet with doors carved with Lotus (Estimate: $20,000-40,000).
