Walking Liber Half Dollars and Remington Firearms Come to Sale With Blackwell Auctions
Oct 08, 2022 12:00 EDTThe Walking Liberty half dollar was the creation of expert engraver Adolph A. Weinman. The coins were in circulation in the United States from 1916 to 1947. Robert W. Woolley, the new United States Mint Director at the time, wanted to replace the Barber coinage after his appointment in 1915. Woolley suggested the Commission of Fine Arts hold a competition to invite new coin designs. The committee assigned Weinman’s creation to a half dollar and dime. However, these designs did not strike well, leading to their discontinuation in 1947. The upcoming sale by Blackwell Auctions presents a single lot of 176 Walking Liberty half dollars. According to Cornelius Vermeule, a notable art historian and classical art curator, these pieces are “the most beautiful American coins.”
Also featured in the sale is a Remington 870 Wingmaster shotgun with MOD barrel. The Remington pump-action shotguns found applications for hunting, self-defense, and shooting sports. They were famous for their reliable construction, easy maintenance, and affordability, making them the best-selling shotgun in history. Another highlight of the auction is a Moorcroft pottery handled vase featuring signature floral patterns and organic lines. Moorcroft pottery articles are sought-after for their nature-inspired designs. They also feature handwritten signatures and Moorcroft stamps of authenticity. The auction also offers a luxury chess set by Studio Anne Carlton, gold and diamond jewelry, a Waltham sterling pocket watch, and Japanese cloisonné vases.
