Known as a painter, muralist, product designer, and toymaker, KAWS is a noted feature of the 20th-century art world. In 1999, KAWS visited Japan, where he created his signature Companion toy. Following its success, the Companion became a recurring figure in KAWS’ work. The upcoming Urban Art Monthly Online Auction, presented by Heritage Auctions, features several pieces by KAWS. One is titled Dissected Companion, a wooden and fiber-reinforced plastic version of the character. It has large gloved hands and an X across one eye. Half of the Companion is split open to reveal a colorful skeleton and internal organs.
Takashi Murakami’s style is another major contributor to both fine art and commercial media. Murakami is a leading artist in the Superflat movement, which employs flattened forms in commercial graphic designs. A Murakami piece, titled The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, is one of the highlighted lots in this event. The auction also showcases an untitled painting from Harmony Korine and an offset color lithograph from Banksy titled Di-Faced Tenner, 10 GBP Note.
