Troubetzkoy Bronze Dancer Sculpture and Richard Wyatt Jr.’s Portrait of Spike Lee at John Moran Auctioneers

John Moran Auctioneers will present its ReDesigned auction in mid-July. Leading this sale is a 1921 patinated bronze sculpture by Prince Paul Troubetzkoy. The son of a Russian diplomat and member of a distinguished family of landed gentry, Troubetzkoy was a self-taught artist who embraced the naturalism of Auguste Rodin. The offered sculpture is titled Danseuse jambe droite levee and depicts Lady Constance Stewart-Richardson, a British dancer and author. The dancer appears to be mid-spin in this sculpture with one leg extended in front of her and one arm flung behind. Another notable sculpture in the catalog is Sergio Bustamante’s Fish cooling (Peces refrescandose), a ceramic and paint work from an edition of 50. The contemporary Mexican Surrealist is known for his dream-like compositions and off-kilter depictions of humans and animals. In the available piece, golden and silver fish overflow from a bucket. Behind is a running faucet. Above the scene, a human face peeks out from a small window. 

Several works by Richard Wyatt Jr. are notable among the fine art offerings. This includes 1992’s Spike Lee 40 Acres. Wyatt is perhaps best known for his murals located in and around Los Angeles, CA. The available acrylic painting shows the American filmmaker and a clear blue sky. Behind him, a donkey kicks over a sign reading “40 Acres,” a reference to Lee’s film production company. Other artists with work in the sale include Elena Von Kohn, David Gihooly, Itzchak Tarkay, and Harold von Schmidt.
