Subasta de Antigüedades

Mexico City-based auction house Morton Subastas offers many of these captivating stories in their upcoming auction, Subasta de Antiguedades.  

The available lots from Mexico, Ireland, China and more demonstrate how many different cultures express their shared appreciation for artistic beauty. Interested collectors will be drawn in by the golden brown and beige tones of the port of Antwerp from Irish artist Joseph Francis Ellis or the evening reds and oranges contrasted against shadowy blue hues in Mexican artist August Lohr’s 1893 painting of a mountainous landscape.  

In contrast to the many paintings and drawings are several figures, statues, and busts. Particularly personable are two Hispanic-Chinese ivory carvings from the 18th century. Both “Head of the Virgin” and “Pair of Hands” feature painted details that bring both pieces to life. Also included are several 20th-century ivory tusks with intricately carved images.
