Striking Paintings by American Folk Artists Grandma Moses and Erastus Salisbury Field Come to Sale with StairAug 10, 2023 10:00 EDT
American folk artist Anna Mary Robertson Moses, better known as Grandma Moses, began painting at the advanced age of 78. She was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1953. Painting was in fact her childhood dream come true. Moses depicted pastoral scenes and New England landscapes in her works. One such oil on board painting attributed to Grandma Moses, titled Home for Thanksgiving, is a key highlight of the upcoming Stair sale. Characteristic of her style of art, it belongs to Moses’ huge oeuvre of over 1,600 paintings. A noteworthy pair of paintings by another American folk artist, Erastus Salisbury Field, also leads the listings. It features oil portraits of Charles Ball Nye and Eliza Cole Nye with her daughter. The portrait painter was well acclaimed for his skills of achieving a perfect likeness of the subject in the very first sitting.
An early Scottish silver cake basket with a “Lothian & Robertson” mark is a striking piece. It is circular shaped and designed with everted rim and high-arched swiveling handle. The base rests on ornamental feet.
