Sotheby’s Brings Contemporary Paintings by Peter Halley and Damien Hirst
Jul 14, 2021 10:00 EDT - Jul 21, 2021 12:00 EDTSotheby’s upcoming contemporary art auction will present 12 lots from Damien Hirst, Cady Noland, Carrie Mae Weems, and Glenn Ligon, among others. One of the leading items is Peter Halley’s untitled acrylic piece from 1991. In the early 1980s, the artist began painting prison cells, barred windows, and grids in neon colors. “I grew up with the notion that paintings create light, that picturing light was really important. As my work developed, I wanted to make paintings that created light, not natural light, but an artificial light,” Halley said. The available piece is a representation of his style and color palette. It shows geometric shapes in shades of yellow, orange, and blue.
The Contemporary Art Online | New York auction also features a painting by Robert Motherwell. An American painter and printmaker, Motherwell was recognized for his Abstract Expressionist style. His works present an intuitive approach to painting. Titled Open No. 128: Charcoal with Blue on Raw Canvas, the available piece shows the outline of a smaller canvas. Interested collectors of contemporary art can explore the full catalog and register to bid online on Sotheby’s.
