September Fine and Decorative Art Sale

The Creighton Davis Gallery September Fine and Decorative Art Sale features over 270 paintings, sculptures, and photographs from some of the most recognizable names in modern art.  Containing several delicate pen and ink drawings by luminaries like Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, the auction offers a rare chance to compliment important collections with works that show the artist’s creative process as well as unmistakable hand.  It is interesting how unmistakable a Chagall sketch is, with broken lands and swirled pen, especially when placed next to a Picasso continuous line drawing. These quiet pieces are juxtaposed next to bold screen prints and lithographs, as well as works of landscape, sculpture, and photography in this highly eclectic auction. 

Instantly recognizable in artistic style as well are two bold and vibrant screen prints from Tom Wesselmann, notably his 1993 Still Live with Liz.  This inclusion is a testament to recent interest in late 80s and 90s pieces, en vogue once again.  There is a Damien Hirst Minnie from his “Mickey Mouse” Portfolio, a Mel Ramos lithograph series of Marilyn Monroe, and a complete set of ten important movie star photos signed by George Hurrell and numbered. 

Complimenting this modern theme of celebrity are beautiful pieces of contemporary art, including several Arthur Secunda etchings, Rufino Tamayo lithographs, and Tie-Feng Jiang hand-pulled serigraphs.  There are also 19th and 20th century fine oil paintings, including many landscapes and portraits, as well as sculpture from this era, mostly of the female form.
