Salvador Dalí Masterpiece, Felix Mendelssohn Bust Available in Basel Auction House’s Upcoming Sale

The upcoming January Fine Art, Paintings & Antiques sale from Basel Auction House will present nearly 400 lots of fine and decorative arts and antiques from around the globe. Leading this auction is an etching by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí, titled Don Quixote. The offered piece is framed in gold and black with a white mat. It is a limited edition numbered 42 out of 99. On verso, there is a justification page in French that is signed by the artist and dated 1963. Dalí was an accomplished draftsman who achieved fame for his Surrealist paintings. Many of his designs were inspired by Renaissance masters. The character of Don Quixote appears in Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. Dalí made many etchings of Don Quixote, one of his most cherished subjects. Another notable lot by the artist in this upcoming auction is a porcelain plate belonging to the series Los Caballos Dalinianos (The Dalinian Horses). A variety of mythological, folklore, and literary characters are represented in this series. 

Several decorative lots will be on offer in this event, including a bust of the German composer, pianist, and conductor Felix Mendelssohn. The memorial bust was made by Ernst Friedrich August Rietschel for the Mendelssohn family. The piece features Mendelssohn with bare shoulders, a furrowed forehead, and curly hair. The bust’s geometric base and cartouche are similar to the capitals of ionic columns. Bidders can also consider a Limoges France porcelain trinket box with flowers and acanthus leaves and an AICO china cabinet by Michael Amini.
