Richard Diebenkorn’s Fine Art Prints and Rufino Tamayo’s Mixografia Available in Upcoming Bonhams Auction

Abstract Expressionist artist Richard Diebenkorn was famous for his lyrical and geometric artworks. In 1961, the artist started focusing on printmaking at Kathan Brown’s Crown Point Press. This fine arts printing studio published the artist’s first prints, titled 41 Etchings Drypoints. After that, Diebenkorn would often return to this press and produce his works. The upcoming Bonhams auction presents a woodcut color print by Richard Diebenkorn on Echizen Kozo Mashi paper. Titled Blue with Red, the artwork is notable for its calm nature and glistening hues. A Mixografia color print on handmade paper by Rufino Tamayo is another highlight. Tamayo developed Mixografia, a medium offering a three-dimensional appearance to fine art prints, to raise his work to a new level. The artist’s skills and the culmination of tribal Mexican art and modernism are visible through the available work, Protesta. 

Also showcased are multiple Thomas Hart Benton lithographs featuring daily life scenes in the United States. The artist felt deeply about the working class population in rural regions. Benton’s Regionalist artworks portray the pain and sadness of the people and rural allure. His works often illustrate farmers or local town workers engaged in daily activities. The auction also features a lithograph, One Plate from Magie Eolienne Portfolio, by Alexander Calder. The artist’s lithographs are notable for their bold colors and use of black lines. The auction also offers Sculpteur et Deux Têtes sculptées, from La Suite Vollard by Pablo Picasso, etchings after John James Audubon, lithographs by Joan Miró, and screen prints by Ken Price.
