Rare 19th-Century American Waltham Hanging Watch & Seth Thomas Clock Offered by Schmitt Horan & Co.
Apr 28, 2024 11:00 EDTSchmitt Horan & Co.’s upcoming live auction will present a rare, late-19th-century Waltham crystal plate pocket watch. The watch was made in 1872 by the watchmaking and clockmaking company American Waltham Watch Co. Aaron Lufkin Dennison (1812 – 1895) was the brain behind the company. Dennison approached Edward Howard, a clock and scale maker from Boston in 1849, and the American Horologe Company was born. This size-16 model is a rare specimen with 17 jewels, stem wind, and lever-set movement with a transparent rock crystal top plate. The bottom plate is gilded and has ornate damascening. It also has a cut bimetallic balance with gold screws, a gold wheel train, polished steel winding wheels with engraved gold washers, and Fogg tadpole micrometric regulator in 18-karat yellow gold.
A Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 10” clock will also be offered in this sale. It is an 1879 hanging wall clock that has a walnut casing. The back has a mahogany veneer panel and ebonized trim. The door features burl walnut accents, spandrels, and a crest. The brass dial has Roman numeral silvered numbers with sweep second hand and spade hands. It is an eight-day weight-driven timepiece movement with the mercury pendulum. Seth Thomas (1785 – 1859) was an American clockmaker and a pioneer of mass production offering longcase clocks, mantel, wall, and table-top clocks. The auction features more than 400 rare American and European pocket and wristwatches, precision regulators, clocks, and antiques including the Vern Playton collection of wrist and pocket watches.
